چکیده

Hanumantha Rao (1999) has published a quite valuable program to calculate the thickness of the gas hydrate stability zone (HSZ) in the marine environment. The method involved is based on the pressure–temperature equations developed by Miles (1995) from the gas hydrate phase equilibrium diagrams. Unfortunately, a bug occurs in the program, which may lead to some calculations appearing incorrect. Unexpected results will result if the program is run with the input data from the sea-floor with no HSZ. Two rows of data (Row 12 and Row 18) listed in Table 1 in Rao’s paper happen to be the case. We draw the gas hydrate phase diagrams using these data, and find that the

Multi-Component-Multiphase Flash Calculations for Systems Containing Gas Hydrates by Direct Minimization of Gibbs Free Energy

The Michelsen stability and multiphase flash calculation by direct minimization of Gibbs free energy of the system at constant temperature and pressure, was used for systems containing gas hydrates. The solid hydrate phase was treated as a solid solution. The fugacities of all components of the hydrate phase were calculated as a function of compositions by the rearranged model of van der Wa...

Gas hydrate stability zone modeling in the Krishna Godavari Basin, Eastern margin of India

The Krishna Godavari (KG) basin is rich in gas hydrate and exhibits an area of wide range of gas hydrate stability zone (GHSZ). In this region, we modeled the base of the gas hydrate stability zone (BGHSZ) utilizing in situ temperature measurements acquired during national gas hydrate program (NGHP) Expedition-01. The bottom simulation reflector (BSR) closely approximates the BGHSZ, and due to ...

Prediction of Structural Changes in Gas Hydrate for Methane and Ethane Mixture by Using Tangent Plane Distance Minimization

Abstract:  In this study, the change in the crystalline structure of gas hydrate was predicted for ternary mixture of methane-ethane-water. For this purpose, the tangent plane distance (TPD) minimization method was used. First, the calculations were performed for the binary mixtures of methane-water and ethane-water as the gas and liquid phases. The results show that for a binary mixture of th...

Passing gas through the hydrate stability zone at southern Hydrate Ridge, offshore Oregon

We present an equilibrium model of methane venting through the hydrate stability zone at southern Hydrate Ridge, offshore Oregon. Free gas supplied from below forms hydrate, depletes water, and elevates salinity until pore water is too saline for further hydrate formation. This system self-generates local three-phase equilibrium and allows free gas migration to the seafloor. Log and core data f...

Interpreting temperature-strain data from mesoscale clathrate experiments

Gas hydrates may play an important role in global climate change, carbon sequestration, energy production and seafloor stability. However, formation and dissociation pathways in geologically complex systems are poorly defined. We present a new approach to processing large amounts of data from a LUNA distributed sensing system (DSS) in the seafloor process simulator (SPS) at Oak Ridge National L...
